Welcome to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Reference Reagent Repository Home Page. This valuable resource of biological reference material was originally established by the NIAID to provide viral reference reagents to researchers who were interested in carrying out comparative viral research. Over time, the repository's viral reagent inventory expanded to include additional reference products such as mycoplasmas, allergens and immunologic reagents. In 1969, the NIAID accepted the added responsibility to evaluate, produce and distribute a panel of interferon (IFN) reference standards that were selected in consultation with acknowledged experts in the field of interferon research. The original panel along with subsequently developed IFN standards and reference preparations comprise the present day World Health Organization (WHO) collection of Interferon Standards and Reference Reagents. All IFN standards and reference material meet stringent international (WHO) requirements for accuracy, consistency and stability that are established by the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardization.
